It’s the first week of April and I’ve harvested and cooked homegrown food everyday! 😊😊😊

1. Oyster mushrooms - which you can grow all year round. These were real stunners.
2. Sculpit / Stridolo/ bladder campion - I can’t praise this beautiful leaf enough. Sown last spring it has very pretty flowers in summer and produces leaves all winter and spring.
3. Red Pak Choi - one of many Asian greens that are perfect for growing in the colder months.
4. Asturian Tree cabbage, this plant is now 3 years old and was a cutting I took from a plant I grew from seed. I never net it, just let the caterpillars at it in the summer and I eat the leaves in winter.
5. Calamansi - you can use it like a lime when it’s green but when it’s ripe it has an intense sour orange flavour that makes it incredible in sweet treats. This spent the winter in my living room!

You don’t need a big garden to eat beautiful homegrown produce.

Everything you need to know about growing potatoes in containers - one of my fave projects ever. Homegrown potatoes are easy, tasty and so fun to harvest.

Potatoes come in lots of varieties and the varieties are divided in to three groups - first early (take about 12 weeks) second early (take about about 14-16 weeks) and main crop (16-20). You can try growing potatoes from the supermarket but it’s best to buy seed potatoes especially bred for growing from a garden centre or online. These are likely to give you better crops and come in a wide range of varieties to choose from.

The potting mixes I tested last year were 1. Peat free compost and perlite 2. Peat free compost and garden soil 3. garden soil. I’m not saying some potting mixes might give you higher yields but lots of sunlight and plenty of water are more important factors. I start my potatoes from mid March, but bear in mind the foliage isn’t frost hardy so if it gets cold they will need some protection.

Add drying beans to your seed list this year. There are many different kinds - last year I grew these beautiful Borlotti (also known as cranberry beans) and honestly after years of growing French beans for the fresh pods I thought why have I not grown beans for drying before!

They are like the most precious jewels stored away for the cold months ready to turn in to the most delicious and nourishing food. I’ll be growing Gigantes - big white runner beans like butter beans and I’m compiling my shopping list for other drying beans of which there are so many beautiful ones to choose from - so do let me know your recommendations!

This Pasta E Fagioli was one of the best things I’ve cooked in months. It blew me away with the depth of flavour and comforting simplicity and is one I will return to over and over. There are many versions of this dish and mine is just a product of my little garden.

50g dried borlotti
Small onion, peeled, cut into qauters
1 carrot, peeled cut in to chunks
Stick celery (with the tops if home grown), cut in to large pieces
2 cloves garlic crushed
Spring of Rosemarry
75g small pasta shapes
Spring cabbage leaves, removed from the stem and finely shredded
Parsley finely chopped
